I have no idea why they made this for NA/NB Miatas. Apparently they’ve sold less than a dozen worldwide.... But I’m not complaining. Listen to those shifts. Added to the “budget is no concern” dream build (it starts at $12,000 )

Oh and if you thought THAT was pricey... Get a load of this

That gear whine is so glorious, but would get old very fast...

Silly for the street, but for those in the racing biz-if it stays glued together for a whole racing season, $12k is cheap. Mazda 6 speeds are crap. I was working on a Pirelli World Challenge team. You always had 3 trannies on hand for a weekend-and had to refresh whatever you used when you got back. I could have a tranny out in 15 minutes- installed in about 25.( 1/2 that getting gear oil in.)

I left the team mid-season. But we had one and were starting to get ready to install it. Another team we shared info with had the first one. It was working great-faster lap times (kind of knocked back with a weight penalty) and was holding up.

I never knew the cost-but ain’t surprised.

You can get a small big of this by shifting into reverse. They’re the only straight-cut gear on almost every car.

For another experience of it (but also quieter because one of the two gears are plastic), you could go to an R/C race. So much gear whine when you get a bunch of these being aggressively driven.

Couldn’t you just take a regular trans and put straight cut gears in, or at least, less helical gears?

Where’s the fun in that? If you just want less gear whine, the sequential above is also available with helical gears! 96% thermal efficiency compared to the straight cut gears 98%.

I’m willing to test that theory, provided all of you will spot me the $12k

That what it was sounding like on the thread I was reading. Actually, with Brexit effecting the exchange rates the guys at 949 Racing picked the unit up for about $9k.

Aren’t the 5-speeds quite a bit stronger? Are they just slower or..? 15 minute tranny drop.... Okay, you’re hired.

Is that a dozen total, or just in NA/NB Miatas? I imagine someone doing something like an Exocet build wouldn’t mind a stronger tranny.

Hmm, didn’t specify. I’m guessing Miata-specific, but I can’t imagine too many people are using them in anything else, either. Most guys doing Exocet builds stick with the stock transmission, and if they do decide they need more than 300hp they’ll go with T-5 or T-56 99% of the time, since it’s bombproof at any power levels they would ever run.

This sequential transmission is actually only rated to 375hp, which is quite low considering the people who MIGHT want a sequential have already built multiple turbo Miatas in the mid 300hp range, at bare minimum. Why pay over $10 for a transmission that can only handle an additional 100hp when you could literally replace your transmission 25 times for the same price or buy multiple T-56's? Only very specific use-cases will look at this.
